UniBrass Gala Concert set to feature a cross-genre trombone spectacular!

Updated: Jan 22, 2022

Join us on the 5th of February at the University of Sheffield’s Octagon Centre for a UniBrass 2022 Gala Concert like no other, featuring the Friary Brass Band alongside guest soloist, jazz trombonist Dennis Rollins, and performances from trombone quartet, Bone-afide.

The Friary Brass Band, London and Southern Counties number one brass band, and MD Chris King will make the trip up the M1 to perform at the culmination of one of the banding calendar’s most entertaining days. Joining them for the evening will be award-winning jazz-funk trombone player Dennis Rollins. A well-known soloist and bandleader with his own band, FUNKY-FUNK!, Dennis will join Friary for a number of bespoke arrangements, in what promises to be a great blend of high calibre brass and jazz playing.

The band will also perform a bespoke version of the two programmes that earned them consecutive Brass in Concert Audience Entertainment Awards, and a growing reputation as one of the most entertaining bands in the country, featuring the 4barsrest player of the year Isobel Daws.

Completing the lineup are Bone-afide, a trombone quartet made up of some of the UK’s leading young trombonists. The Royal Philharmonic Society Philip Jones Prize-winning group perform works from all genres, and will also join with Dennis Rollins, performing specially commissioned arrangements.

UniBrass Foundation Chair Andy Straiton commented, “We are really excited for this year’s concert that will showcase some fantastic jazz and brass band music. I’ve no doubt it will be unlike anything we’ve seen before at UniBrass!”

Tickets for what promises to be a spectacular cross-genre concert are available from just £14, and discounted combination tickets are also available covering both the concert and the UniBrass contest taking place earlier in the day.
